Duty, Tariffs, and State Registration

Vehicles 25 years or older are excluded from the newer 25% Section 232 auto tariff and pay the standard 2.5% duty rate on customs value. Clearing US Customs is not the same as being road-legal everywhere: emissions testing, safety inspection, and title and registration requirements vary by state, and California and other CARB states apply stricter emissions rules than federal law requires.
