Direct answer: Whether a JDM car is legal to import depends on the destination country's age, safety, emissions, steering and registration rules. This page covers Canada and Australia, where official rules have been checked. For the other markets, the rules are being confirmed and no claim is made here.
Canada
Transport Canada states that vehicles older than 15 years are not regulated at importation under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Age is determined primarily by the month and year of manufacture on the manufacturer's label, not by model year. Importing does not guarantee licensing: some provinces will not license right-hand-drive vehicles. The Quebec registration rule is not covered here, because its source has not yet been checked. Confirm it with the provincial registry.
Australia
Under the 25-year pathway, a vehicle must have been originally built, or significantly modified, more than 25 years ago. Approval from the Department of Infrastructure is required before import. Age is based on build date, using the month and year where available. The pathway sits within the Road Vehicle Standards framework introduced on 1 July 2021. The page is ambiguous on whether the cut-off is "25 years or older" or "more than 25 years" ago. Confirm the exact date with the Department before buying.
