The Mitsubishi Pajero: A 4WD Legend from Japan
The Mitsubishi Pajero (sold as Montero in some markets) is one of Japan's most iconic 4WD exports. A three-time Dakar Rally winner, the Pajero is respected globally for its go-anywhere capability, comfortable long-distance cruising, and bulletproof Super Select 4WD system. Japan is the primary source for used Pajeros, and the model was discontinued in 2019 — making Japanese export stock the only source of newer examples.
Pajero Generations
1st Generation (L040/L140 Series, 1982–1991)
The original Pajero that won Dakar. Now a sought-after classic — rugged, simple, and 35+ years old. Qualifies for classic import in many countries (25-year rule). SWB 3-door and LWB 5-door versions. 2.3L or 2.5L turbo diesel engines.
Japan FOB: USD 3,000–12,000 depending on condition. Well-maintained examples command significant premiums as collectibles.
2nd Generation (V20/V40 Series, 1991–1999)
The generation that truly established Pajero's global dominance. Introduced the famous Super Select 4WD system — a genuine full-time/part-time switchable 4WD with centre differential lock. Available in SWB (3-door) and LWB (5-door). Most popular exports: V46 (2.8L turbo diesel), V43/V44 (3.0L V6 petrol), V45 (3.5L V6 petrol).
Japan FOB prices:
- V46 2.8L diesel SWB/LWB (1991–1999): USD 5,000–18,000
- V45/V43 petrol LWB (1991–1999): USD 4,000–12,000
- Late (1996–1999) with DOHC engine: premium pricing
2nd gen Pajeros are 25–35 years old and qualify as classics in Australia, Philippines, and other markets with 25-year rules.
3rd Generation (V60/V70 Series, 1999–2006)
Pajero entered the modern era: independent front suspension (replacing the old solid front axle), more refined interior, and improved on-road comfort without sacrificing serious off-road capability. Available exclusively as LWB 5-door from this generation. Key variants: V73 (3.0L V6 petrol), V75/V78 (3.2L Di-D turbo diesel — the must-have export engine).
The 3.2L Di-D (4M41 engine) produces 160–165hp and is one of the best diesel 4WD engines Japan ever made — torquey, refined, and durable.
Japan FOB prices:
- V78W 3.2L Di-D (1999–2006): USD 8,000–18,000
- V75W 3.5L V6 petrol (1999–2006): USD 6,000–14,000
4th Generation (V80/V90 Series, 2006–2019) — Final Generation
The last and most refined Pajero. Significantly upgraded interior, stronger structure, more powerful 3.2L Di-D (now 200hp), and improved Super Select II 4WD. Sold as Pajero Exceed, Super Exceed, and Limited in Japan. Discontinued in 2019 — no replacement announced, making good examples increasingly valuable.
Japan FOB prices:
- V88W/V98W 3.2L Di-D (2006–2012): USD 15,000–28,000
- V88W/V98W (2012–2015, mid-facelift): USD 22,000–35,000
- V88W/V98W (2015–2019, final spec): USD 28,000–45,000
- Super Exceed final spec (2018–2019): USD 35,000–50,000+
Super Select 4WD — Why It Matters
Pajero's Super Select 4WD is the feature that sets it apart from many competitors. Unlike part-time 4WD systems (which can only be used off-road), Super Select allows full-time 4WD on all surfaces — you can drive on tarmac in 4H indefinitely. The system also has 4H Lock, 4L, and 4L Lock modes for serious terrain. This versatility makes the Pajero genuinely useful in both city and bush conditions.
SWB vs LWB
- SWB (3-door): Only 1st and 2nd generation. More manoeuvrable, popular for off-road enthusiasts. Increasingly rare and collectable.
- LWB (5-door): Standard from 3rd generation onwards. More practical as a family or fleet vehicle. All 3rd and 4th gen Pajeros are LWB.
3.2L Diesel vs Petrol V6: Which to Buy?
- 3.2L Di-D diesel: Lower running costs, better torque for towing and off-road, preferred in Africa and Middle East where diesel is cheaper. The right choice for most export markets.
- 3.5L/3.8L V6 petrol: Smoother, quieter, better highway refinement. Preferred in markets with cheap petrol or where diesel availability is limited.
